2002 Subaru Impreza WRX – transmission?
The first gear in the transmission sometimes grinds when downshifting from 2nd to 1st. Is this because the synchros are worn out? It goes in just fine when you let it fall into place but if you downshift like with the rest of the gears it will grind.
I could be sitting at a traffic light and not moving.

I use Mobil 1 gear oil.
I use a mixture of transmission fluids that is sort of controversial so I won’t recommend it but it allows me to shift into first from about 27 mph without rev matching and a lot faster if I give it some gas. Basically, I would try some good fluid. Motul, Redline and Amsoil make some good synthetic gear oils that people seem to really like. Maybe mix a half or whole bottle of some kind of synchromesh fluid to see if that helps. The grinding may be a result of synchro wear but that does not mean they are shot and need replacing. Proper gear oil can do wonders and cost nowhere near the cost of a rebuild so it’s worth a try. And I only recommend this because i assume you are shifting into first because you need to. Like a tight autocross course. otherwise the guy above is correct and there is absolutely no reason to be down shifting into first. In fact doing it too much when you don’t know how to properly do it could be the reason its wearing.
