engine knocking on my 94 subaru impreza 94?
had some knocking coming from engine bay while driving at low revs (sounds like timing not right)
then engine cut out on roundabout and would not re-start, called the recovery service, they gave the battery a boost then the car started, still had the noise, they then recovered the car to their garage, phoned me up and said it would be easier to just change the engine. I have read many threads on forums where most people are saying its the timing, is it worth having the timing re-done before i buy a new engine ? or any other thoughts would br greatly accepted as a new engine is going to cost a lot
Assuming it runs now, if checking the timing would make you feel better, have it done. It is a simple inexpensive thing to check and adjust.
But, if your engine is knocking it could several issues, many of them major. For example, if you have worn bearings in the engine connecting rods (called “Rod knock”) – they are probably right about needing that new engine, or rebuilding what you have.
BTW, telling us the mileage and the maintenance history helps your question get answered. How many miles? Do you know if the car had all it’s maintenance done? On time? All oil changes done on time? Etc.
