Do Subaru Boxster Engines normally make a kind of rattle sound like a VW Beetle?
Is it because its a Boxster engine it sounds a bit like a bean bag rattle noise like a VW Beetle boxster engine?
I had a clicking noise from a cylinder which could of been a lifter or piston slap but i took it for a long drive today and i all i could here was that VW kind of noise.
The clicking noise before was clearly coming from the left hand side of the engine and not the right, but after after a long drive today both sides sound exactly the same.
The clicking noise sounds like piston slap. I have an 03 Legacy that has this problem. The dealer suggested it was normal; caused by Subaru fitting pistons with shorter skirts. It is worse in winter and goes away when the engine warms up. The only rattle on my car is from broken fittings on the heat shields around the catalytic converter. I had them welded, but this fix doesn’t last. My mechanic is neutral on the piston slap. He said he has seen cars go 200,000 miles with piston slap, and others with problems at low mileages. Some Subaru’s do have a distinctive exhaust sound, but I’m not sure how that is related to the boxer engine configuration.
