Can someone please tell me all that I need to know about car rims?
I just had my 2000 subaru legacy fixed at the dealership and they are telling me that I need new rims. 2 are really bad and 2 are kind of bad according to them. What exactly are rims? Have you ever had to have them replaced on your car? Have you ever bought car parts online? Any recommendations on where I can find some cheap ones? The dealer did mention after market or even going to a junk yard. What are after market car parts? All advice is needed. One last thing, a coworker told me to get a 2nd opinion because she is surprised that a 2000 subaru would need new rims is she right?
First I’m going to answer your questions in the order you have asked them.
Rims are the round metal part that your tires are mounted on. These are then bolted to your car. Some people also refer to the rim as a wheel. I have never had to replace the rims on any of my vehicles due to normal wear and tear. I have replaced them due to damage, change in tire size and for aesthetic reasons. I have bought car parts online and will do so again if I feel I can get an equivelant quality part at a better price after shipping is added than what I can obtain locally. I will make my personnal recommendations below. After market parts are replacement parts made by anyone other than the orignal manufacturer of the vehicle. OEM is Original Equipment Manufactuer. In this case the OEM is Subaru. I would tend to agree with your friend, a second opinion would be a good idea. Unless you live in an area where the roads are salted heavily during the winter months I cannot imagine rims going bad at 8 years old. The only exception to this woud be if they were some cheap stamped steel wheels that have rusted excessivly. Not knowing which model Legacy you have, what options came on the car and the climate where you live makes this a judgement call on the actual condition of your rims. In other words without actually seeing them it is hard to tell if they are good or bad. It would be best to have someone without an ultierior motive of making money on a sale of new rims to make this judgement for you. Do you have any friends or relatives who are backyard mechanics who you feel confident in that could evaluate thier condition for you? If you have no other choice select a reputable service center who you feel will give you an honest opinion.
If it should be determined that new rims are necessary you have several possibilities. First you will need to determine what size the rims are that are currently on the vehicle. Whoever looks at your vehicle should willingly supply you with this information. You want to get the same size replacement rims so that your current tires will fit the new ones correctly. Don’t get bamboozled into being told you have to get new tires to fit new rims because they are a different size. There should be rims readily availble that fit your current tires.
I would suggest calling your local junkyards first as this will undoubtably be your cheapest option. I would then call several local shops that deal in tires as they generally also deal in “aftermarket” rims. Ask them what cheap rims they have to fit your vehicle. Whoever has better pricing, go and take a look at them. If possible take a friend with you who is familiar with working on thier own vehicle to look at them with you. Some rims are pretty pricey and unless you want to dress up your vehicle there is no sense spending more than is absolutly necessary for some basic rims. I would hazard a guess of between $50-$70 per rim would be pretty close for a basic new “aftermarket” rim.
Typically by the time you find a good cheap set of rims online and then add the expensive shipping charges you won’t end up with a very good deal on even cheap rims so I would suggest finding them locally. You may even find some in your local “Wheeler Dealer”. Wheeler Dealer is a locally free publication here listing cars and parts for sale by private individuals and some dealerships.
I hope at the very least I have provided you with some information that can assist you in making a decission. Bes of luck!
