What are the things to look for in a used Subaru?
I’m going to be moving up to New Hampshire in about a month, and my dear old Saturn has to stay behind in Texas. I want a car that can mostly get from points A to B safely, and is cheap. Subaru Imprezas and Legacies from ’96 to ’02 seem to satisfy both criteria nicely, and I’ll probably buy one from an individual when I get up there (instead of buying one here, where there are fewer Subarus to choose from, and which would require me to put 1500+ miles on a car I’ve only had for a short time in 2 or 3 days).
I believe that Subarus from the ’96 to ’02 era have head gasket and coolant issues sometimes. Is there a way to check these things out thoroughly but inexpensively with the owner before I actually buy a car?
Are there any other issues for Subarus (or in general) I should be very mindful of, other than what I can get from reading CARFAX reports?
The timing belt won’t break if it was changed as recommended regular maintenance.
Ask if any problems with the head gasket.My Impreza 98 did blow one when revving high.
My brothers 98 automatic Legacy, (*same engine) has given him no trouble at all, at least with the first 100,000 miles.
We both live in Eastern Canada– rust is not a problem–so far.
We would both make Subaru our next purchase.
Remember about the timing belt. If it should be ,but hasn’t been replaced as yet. Remove the expected cost from your offer.
Regular maintenance suggests the inspection every 15,000 miles. look for missing or cracked teeth. If there is any doubt,make allowance in your offer.
Maintenance recommends changing it at 100,000 miles in all cases.
