If you love auto racing, you undoubtedly have your favorite championship. Whether it is stock car racing, Indy or Formula One, you need to experience new types of racing every so often. The World Rally Championship is worth your attention.
What is the World Rally Championship, better known as the WRC? It is a series of rally races around the world that are simply mind blowing. Each rally is made up of stages on roads you and I drive. The cars are cranked up versions you and I drive with Fords, and until recently, Subaru, being the leading teams.
Each rally presents a different environment for the teams. The most recent rally was in Norway. As you might expect, the stages were all on snowy roads through forests and the like. The cars go cranking down the roads at mind bending speeds considering the conditions. They don’t race each other directly, but sets times for each stage. That may sound boring, but you have to see the onboard shots as a car going 90 miles an hour goes cranking around a corner in the snow on an icy road. It is madness.
There are two particular things about WRC that make it really stand out. The crashes are absolutely epic. The “big one” in a NASCAR event has nothing on a WRC car coming around a corner and hitting a cow/tractor/tree at 90 miles per hour. There are no barriers on the side of the road. If the driver can’t keep the car on the road, then he suffers the consequences.
The second amazing thing is the average WRC fan. Remember, there are no barriers. The cars go flying around corners and the fans are just standing on the side of the road within a few feet of the cars. When the cars lose control or start rolling, the fans start diving in all directions. It is a miracle people aren’t killed more often. It definitely adds to the white knuckle aspect of the racing.
Perhaps the best part of WRC racing is the old school aspect. Picture a car flying down a dirt road. He comes to a turn, misses it and rolls the car two times ending up on his roof. He is out of the race, right? No, the fans will run over and help the driver push the car over. If they can do it, he’ll jump back in and take off down the road. Cars often finish missing bumpers, hoods and sometimes wheels! It is madness and incredibly entertaining.
Describing the allure of WRC is difficult. The best way to experience it is to simply watch some videos of the races online.
