how interchangeable is the Subaru ej22 with the ej25?
I have a 96 outback with a ej22 manual engine, I would like to install a ej25 engine from the same production era in its place, does anyone know if the crank shaft bolt patterns will match up so that i can just transfer the pressure plate? and are they any big changes that would between the fitment differences that would prevent me from bolting it in? I’m sure i can full the computer, as long as everything bolts in.
You will want to use the flywheel and the AC compressor bracket off the 2.2, they’ll bolt right on. The power steering line brackets will not line up on the passenger side, and will have to be bent out of the way for the wider 2.5 intake. Wiring, fuel lines, cold air intake, everything else will bolt right in, A 2.5 is just a bored out 2.2 with DOHC, you won’t have to mess with the computer, it will run fine. ‘96-99 2.5 will work. IMHO I would stick with the more reliable 2.2 though, most Outback folks junk the 2.5’s for the 2.2’s, with all the head gasket problems they have.
