what should i get for my first tires?
i need to get new tires for my car. I am a new driver and its my first car a 2000 subaru legacy awd. I am wondering whether or not i should get separate winter and summer tires or just some good all season tires since i do have awd. I need deep snow traction bc i live off of lake erie and winters are long and hard. cost is obviously an issue but i have been looking at goodyears and pirellis any other brands i should consider? models? reviews? anything would be appreciated..tire size is 205/55R16
I live in the snow belt and work in the tire industry. I’ve driven just about everything in every kind of weather.
It doesn’t matter if you have FWD, RWD or AWD – traction still comes down to those 4 rubber things on the pavement. AWD is great for accelerating but doesn’t do a thing to help you stop or turn and that is where you can break things.
Since I started driving 24 years ago I have had 2 sets of tires for all of my vehicles – including the AWD ones. One set of dedicated winter-only tires and one set of summer-only or all-season tires. The problem with “all-season” tires is that all-season does not mean winter. Most people do not realize that so-called all-season tires tt best provide traction (when new) only in light snow and they start losing their grip even on dry pavement at temperatures below 45-deg F. Because of this just across the pond in Canada having a dedicated set of winter-only tires in mandatory in most provinces.
We American’s are often cheap and lazy and only care about price, not safety so having two sets of tires is just too complicated and expensive. After all, “it’s just my teenage daughters car… just put the cheapest tires you’ve got on it!” But your tires are the single most important piece of safety equipment on the car. Not where I would recommend going cheap.
Your tire size of P205/55R16 89H (or you can use 205/55R16 91H) is hugely popular with lots of choices. The Goodyear Assurace Tripletread and Pirelli P4 4-Season offer far better than average winter traction when new compared to other all-season tires but they can’t compare even to a budget dedicated winter-only tire when it comes to extreme cold, ice and snow traction. Paired with a second set of winter-only tires like the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 (my personal favorite) you’ll be ready for anything. If you bought a set of winter tires you could consider a tire for summer like the Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max low-rolling resistance tire for summer use. This tire claims better fuel economy but the cost is reduced traction in slippery conditions – which won’t be a factor if you have winter tires.
If 2 sets of tires is impractical for you but you still want maximum safety then I strongly suggest you consider the Nokian WR G2 from Finland. These can be hard to find and they are not cheap but it is the only true “4-season” tire on the market, offering the traction of a dedicated winter tire along with the ability to be driven all year round. I have a set of these and they work really really well.
