What is wrong with my Subaru Outback?
All summer was fine but now that winter is here, the clunking is back. There is a loud thump when I go around a corner, go over a speed bump or even go over the half-curb leading into a driveway. We have already had to replace all of the bushings, the front axle and three dealerships have no idea what the problem is. Check that – one dealership said it was the axle because it was not an original manufacturer’s part – but the part was purchased form their own parts department! Anyway, Subaru is not help. Has anyone had a problem like this and if so, were you able to resolve it? Thanks.
It is a 2002 Outback LL Bean Edition with 85,000 miles on it. The problem started when I had about 50,000 miles on it and moved it from the east coast to the west coast.
We have checked struts, replaced bushings and front axle plus cv joints and covers.
What bushings have been replaced? Be careful going to those dealerships, it sounds like they are trying to ride you.
From what you have described I would guess the problem is in your sway bar endlinks or in the strut top mounts. You can replace the endlinks with better ones from Whiteline or Perrin, they cost similar to OEM but are much beefier and will make the car a bit more responsive in turns.
Like the other person said, bounce the car while looking under the hood and see how the upper strut mounts look. If there is excessive play, they might need to be replaced. The car is old enough to have worn those completely out.
