Rebuild an engine or not?
I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback Limited Edition with about 130k miles on it. Its not in great condition (dings, dents, worn interior), but I’m not embarrassed driving it around. Recently the radiator sprung a leak. Come to find out there is some gasket down inside the engine that may be worn and leaking emissions into the water system. This, the mechanic says, pressurized the water system, causing the leak to the radiator. They tested this with a smog emissions wand sitting over the open radiator hole while the car was running.
The car is undrivable because the engine temp maxes out. The mechanic is recommending either sell the car as is (they have no interest in buying it) or have the engine rebuilt or replaced at a cost of about $2000. I can afford the cost, but I can’t afford a new car.
Is it worth rebuilding? Or do I really have no choice here?
blown head gasket, $2,000 is way too high a price for that job, more like $1,000 to $1,200.
