Why do you think the US automakers can’t produce vehicles that are equal to/or superior to Japan vehicles?
When you think of quality, value retention, economy, and reliability, Ford, GM, Chrysler, etc. remain below, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Subaru.
What happened to the US since the late sixties to cause this reversal? Made in Japan use to equate to cheap and undesirable. Your thoughts please.
After WWII we gave the Japanese the latest steel technology to rebuild their country. American manufactures were still using old manufacturing technology because it would have been to much trouble to tear down their foundries and rebuild. The Japanese were very smart and they used it to build supertanker cargo carrier ships. Next they started building products that they could export to the US. The first toyota sold in the states was in 1958 and it was a joke. By the 70′s they figured out how to make a good motor although the cars were still bad. Throughout the 80′s and 90′s the quality of the cars got better and the motors remained good. Now they rival German cars in quality (but they are still front wheel drive). American cars of today are just as good as the Japanese, its perception that hurts their sales. Buick consistantly ranks in the top 5 against all comers.
American manufactures have had some success in the small car market with the Saturn and the Ford Focus and Neon, but the perception is that Japanese are better small cars so it doesn’t really matter how good the American cars are in this segment, they will still not sell as well as the Japanese.
