Subaru lemons?
27000 miles my head gaskets went on my Subaru Forester 2003, just my luck, warranty ended few weeks ago.
I was the biggest subaru fan, but between the piston slapping “apparently it is normal”, wind noise from the mirrors “another normal” and head gaskets, I am thinking of dropping the brand all together. If anyone can find me anywhere on the forums where a head gasket went on a toyota or honda with 27000 miles, I will take my statement back, but I doubt they will…I couldn’t!
So I guess my question is, after getting head gasket replacement, am I still going to be in a world of hurt in the coming months / years with my Subie?
The piston slap problem is a side effect of the Subaru’s boxer engine design, not much you can really do about it. The head gasket issue is something that plagued just about all cars with the 2.5L non turbo engine from 1996 through about 2004. The key here is, it’s not a problem with the design of the engine, but of the head gasket itself. The replacement gaskets Subaru uses eliminate this flaw, and are standard issue on all new engines 2004-present. Don’t let this turn you away from what is otherwise a very reliable, and fun to drive car. I’m on my second Subaru now (07 WRX), and the lack of time they spend in the shop is what drove me to buy my first. We have regular customers with older Legacies showing well over 300K on the odometer, and still going like a top. It’s still your call, but IMO, your bad experience is just a hiccup in the life of an otherwise great vehicle.
