I own a 96 Subaru Grand Wagon (outback), but they only came out in auto that year.?
would a simple legacy 5 speed bolt straight on?
Ha ha! Welcome to the magic world of subaru interchangability! They made a few manuals that year, they are just few and far between. The auto and manual trans use the same bellhousing and would fit. Other things you need to change:
-Final drive (rear diff) to match the center diff ratio
-Longer driveshaft about 2″ difference
-Clutch pedal bolts right in, just need to run the line and bypass the park nuetral switch or wire in a clutch safty switch
-and the manual shifter assembly. an experianced subaru tech could do the swap in a day without too much trouble.
If you really want to have fun, do a manual swap weld up the center diff, leave the front cv joint caps on where they slip onto the trans and have your output shaft hardened and you have a sick rear wheel drive outback.
