If you are travelling to British Columbia, there are many places you can choose to visit. There is Victoria, Vancouver and the North Shore. But, one thing you should include in your itinerary is the Okanagan. And what better place in the Okanagan than Penticton.
Penticton in the Okanagan language literally means “a place to stay forever”. With so many options, you can have the quality of life that you’ve been wanting to enjoy. Ayy, you might just stay here and live forever. If you are into skiing, there is the Apex Mountain Resort. Are you into hiking or biking? the Kettle Valley Railway Trail is there for your enjoyment. For rock climbers, Skaha Bluffs is there for you to conquer. Boating and fishing buffs are welcome as well with both the Skaha and the Okanagan Lake for your pleasure. Penticton is truly for everyone, whether you are a retiree, a wine connoisseur, single person or with a family. I can guarantee that you’d enjoy this place and will leave fully satisfied.
All year round, Penticton offers the visitor festivals and events to enjoy. It is sometimes touted as BC’s “City of Festivals” and below are some of the festivals that I want to highlight and which I think you will like.
For the sports buff, every summer the annual Subaru Ironman Canadian Triathlon is held in Penticton around the end of August. Mind you, this is not for the weak and the faint of heart. For the sporty type out there, this event is for you. Participants will have to swim 3.8 km (2.4 miles), bike for about 180 km (112 miles) and run for 42.2 km (26.2 miles) to the finish line. Just a word of advice, the course is tough so better be prepared before you dive in and join this triathlon.
For the wine lovers, you cannot say that you’ve tried it all until you’ve tasted the wines from the Okanagan valley. During autumn, you can visit and experience the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival. During this time, you can tour the vineyards all over the valley, pair it with great food and enjoy yourself with over 165 events focusing solely on wine, food in a spectacular setting. Autumn in Okanagan Wine Country is the perfect time to watch the grapes ripen in the sun and indulge yourself in the harvest celebrations. This is the only wine festival in North America that takes place during the heart of grape harvest. At other times of the year, there are the Spring, Summer and Icewine festival that you can enjoy as well.
For the jazz lover, the Pentastic Jazz Festival awaits you. It usually takes place early September and includes world-class jazz bands. Enjoy the live music from some of the best musicians played in intimate venues all over town. The festival is touted as “the best jazz party in the Northwest” and intends to stay that way for many years to come.
