Subaru drinking oil like a bar fly?
My Subaru Impreza drinks oil like a bar fly. I’ve lost more than a quart in less than 2000 miles with no signs of leaks and no obvious burning of oil. My coolant is clean and I’ve been using Pennzoil Platinum (fully synthetic) oil. A guy over at bobistheoilguy.com suggests my cylinders are glazed from an improper break in. What might other causes of my problem be?
The car is a 2004 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport with the 2.5L non-turbo engine, 5spd manual transmission with 92k miles. I bought it pre-owned in 07.
As I said there is no obvious burning of oil: No smoke in the exhaust or other obvious signs.
I pulled the oil fill cap off the filler neck while it was running and could feel a very small amount of blowback but not much.
I crawled under it myself and it’s the cleanest undercarriage I’ve ever seen. If it’s ever leaked a drop of oil, no one could tell.
Do you have any blue smoke from the exhaust? That is a sign of bad rings (seals inside the motor). I think I recall something about this being discussed when I was looking at an 02 WRX, but I can’t recall the problem. Try posting on NASIOC, it’s an all Subaru owners forum.
