How can you tell if your Subaru is equipped with a limited slip rear differential?
I have an 04 Outback Wagon base model with a manual transmission. The owner’s manual mentions the limited slip differential (LSD) but implies that this is an optional feature. Is there something on the VIN that would let me know if my Subaru has this? If I crawl under there will it be clearly marked one way or the other? Even if someone knows which subarus got LSD as standard or for which it was an option would be helpful. Thanks!
Jack up the rear end (both sides lifted) and hand turn one of the wheels (leave off handbrake). If the other side turns in the same direction it’s LSD. Or turn one side while someone holds the other side, if it doesn’t move, you have an open differential.
Don’t bother with the front because the Outback is not a real 4×4 and the front differential will be an open one.
