Subaru WRX STI as a family car?
Hi, I have recently received a promotion at my work place, and I’m finally able to buy my dream car. But, it will also be our only car. I’m married and have a 5 year old child. How comfortable the WRX STI as a family car? It should sit my child in the back row with a full child car seat, be moderately quiet, safe, and be able to travel around 2000km a year. Also, because I live in a rather snowy place (Nova Scotia) it should also be able to handle tough winter conditions.
What do you think? Thanks!
I’m talking about a brand new 2011 hatchback/sedan WRX STI.
The brand new STI’s have been softened up a little to cater to a wider audience. I would say it’s a fine family car. It’s plenty safe and with proper tires, the AWD system is awesome. If you were looking at a previous model, I would say that the stiff suspension might be an issue but like I said the new ones are a little softer with new suspension geometry to sacrifice little in the handling department. I would not discount the WRX though if you are just looking for an family car. The upgrades that the STI comes with are well worth the price difference if you like to track the car. But for a daily driver, the WRX has plenty of power and is just as fun off the track. Plus things like 17 in tires instead of 18 and cheaper brake pads will save some money in the long run on wear items. You really need to go out and check them out though. Take the child seat with you and drive it around like you would with your family and see how it works out. Really the only way to know for sure. Then while you are at the dealership, you can try out the new Legacy GT’s as well. Also a fun car for the money and they have a little more room than an Impreza.
