What spark plugs would be best for my application?
I have an ’03 Subaru Forester X with the base 2.5 H4 engine. I am looking for a long life replacement spark plug. I have used entry level Bosch Platinum Pluses and they worked pretty well for nearly 75,000 miles. However I have heard that NGK’s are really good for Japanese cars. In your hopefully informed opinion, what plug would you recommend the NGK Iridium IX or the Bosch Platinum +4? They both sell for about the same price locally. Thanking you all in advance!
I appreciate the answers thus far and possibly I have answered my own question. However I would like a bit more performance from a plug if possible (hey when talking spark plugs it isn’t going to break the bank). That being said I would appreciate an answer pertaining to the plugs that I mentioned and any insights on real world experience with the 2 plugs I mentioned. Thanks again.
Every engine I’ve owned seems to prefer one type of plugs over another, and I don’t know what the difference is, but there is one. I wouldn’t touch the platinum +4′s if you paid me to, mainly because they are a waste of money. There is no point to having 4 ground straps on the plug, as there is still only 1 spark to 1 strap from the electrode with a standard ignition. It would take a much stronger ignition system than I’ve seen in an automotive engine to use multiple grounds as they advertise. With that, I have had great luck with NGK’s in multiple cars, including a personal car. While there are performance oriented spark plugs, by themselves they aren’t going to make more power, they just enable the car to make its maximum performance when other parts are improved.
