Cooling system problems?
1984 Subaru GL
I’ve replaced the Water Pump, and thermostat. and I still don’t think the engine is sucking in coolant.
I drove the car about half a mile down the road and the temperature Gage didn’t move, and there is no pressure on the radiator hoses. I can just open the cap right up and no hot water gushes out.
so what else do i check, is there a test i can perform to see if water is properly cycling.
I know 100% that the thermostat is good i tested it before dropping it in
It sounds like it’s not warming up. Could still be a bad thermostat. You can test it in a pan of boiling water.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
A half mile may not have been far enough to get it up to operating temperature. If the radiator is full, it will suck very little coolant in from the reservoir.
Do this: Remove the radiator cap, start the engine and watch the coolant in the radiator. As the engine warm up, the coolant will rise and may even overflow a little, but it will be moving. If this happens, you know your cooling system is working properly.
