Is there a specific mileage at which I should get the timing belt replaced on my 2001 Subaru Forester?
There are under 90k miles on it now, and the dealership service guy told me it should have been changed already. What should be the guiding factor?
Go with whatever the owners / service manual says. Some cars are as low as 60K some do go 100K but that seems less common. If it fails and you are lucky you will be stranded. Some engine designs are what are called ‘interference’ which means when the belt breaks the internal engine parts smash into each other. Sometimes when that happens its not worth fixing and its cheaper to just replace the whole engine. A $300 belt replacement is much cheaper than a whole engine.
