subaru speedometer problems

Put used tranny in ‘90 Subaru, now no speedometer, solutions?

Just had a used tranny installed in 1990 Legacy wagon and now the speedometer and, of course, cruise control don’t work. Mechanic looks, says it’s not turning the shaft, no way to fix it that doesn’t involve major work or just trying another transmission to see if that will work, with no guarantees. We would have to pay labor all over again.

Is there any other fix for this? Is the mechanic legally bound to fix the speedometer at his cost since it worked fine when it went in or is this just one of those unforseeable fluke problems?

Thanks for any advice.

Probably a gear fell out of the used tranny. Should be able to fix, unless the used tranny had that problem.Might be internal.I know its expensive but a rebuilt tranny is the way to go, and not at some shop, but a rebuilder like Jasper.
