Driving from Calgary to Vancouver, is it worth it to get winter tires for only this trip?
I have regular tires on a Subaru Forester as I am from Texas. I’ve been living in Calgary but am now packing up my stuff to drive to Vancouver. I’m not too familiar with driving through mountains, and I can’t really figure out how bad or okay the weather is going to be tomorrow. It’s been nice in calgary and vancouver but the highways on the mountains I’m not so sure. My car has all wheel drive, but would it be worth it to buy winter tires? It would only be for this trip, since afterward I won’t be driving in any winter weather. Seems like a waste but I’m also scared to drive without them.
If any Canadians have made this drive or something similar please let me know your opinion!
Also if you have any other advice for this trip I would greatly appreciate anything you have that would ease my fears…
Get snow tires installed on your car and carry chains. Weather in the mountains at this time of year can turn nasty in a few hours. The last thing you need to do is get caught in a snowstorm without proper tires. Also, carry a shovel, blankets, food, water, matches and candles. This is Canada, not Texas – you MUST be winter ready when travelling. Under no circumstances allow your gas tank to go below 1/2.
The Alberta Motor Association could probably provide you with a list of suggested things to carry with you.
