93 Subaru Legacy Won’t Go Into Reverse – Is It Still Safe to Drive Forward?
All of the sudden, completely unexpected, the transmission in my 1993 Subaru Legacy Wagon (non-turbo) stopped going into reverse. The reverse just gave out one day (it was not an intermittent problem before or anything). It just acts like its in neutral when put into reverse. It drives fine in Drive and all other gears. I called the mechanic who said it was probably just time for a new transmission, with the total probably looking upwards of $2k.
I don’t want to put a ton more money in this car, even though it is a very good one, so my first question is is this something a filter change and fluid flush would likely fix? Or is it really something more severe?
Also, would it probably be okay to drive (just pulling through into parking spaces, not going into any tight places, etc) just in drive with the reverse broken? Or would I likely cause more transmission damage?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
no matter what you need to get the tranny broke down to find the problem. a fluid and filter change will not fix it. if its a automatic, sometimes the syncros wont fully engage causing this. had it happen in a 93 ford ranger.
