98 Subaru legacy GT, Turbo install on stock motor?
along with the turbo what else will I need?
I heard its possible to do as long as you change a few other pieces? the other subarus in my price range are all stock non turbo… so id rather put money into upgrades then money into a new car…
Would it be cheaper to do an sti swap? or buy parts and put a turbo in on the stock motor?
Basically I think you have to ask yourself what exactly you’re looking for, if you want a fast QUALITY car, you shouldn’t be asking whats cheapest. Parts are usually expensive for a reason. (though not always)
If you have a 98 Legacy GT, I’d suggest you keep it, it’s gonna run for a loooong loooong time as long as you maintain it properly. While you do this, save money and buy, say, the cheapest car you can find with your favorite body style, no matter what engine that car has in it. Then at that point, do an engine swap while STILL using your GT as a daily driver. In the long run, this will prove cost effective. Just an example, there is a 95 Impreza 1.8 on craiglist in my area right now for $900, I don’t care how many miles it has, but the exterior is ok, full WRX engine swap w/tranny, new suspension, some interior mods and paint w/manual labor body work (and a lot of 6 packs of beer) will end up costing a lot less than say an 04 WRX if done right
If you keep your GT, you won’t have to worry about your baby (what most people call their project cars) getting warn on in everyday driving, you’ll still have a solid car for everyday use and long trips, (trust me, a nice car like a GT is WAY better than say a fully modded STi while driving everyday in traffic, and long road trips) and you can take you’re project car out to play on nice days.
However, if you want just the one car, it’d be better in the long run to do an engine swap, your stock motor just won’t take a bolt on very long
